At the plate: The Baseball Project's new album
The Baseball Project has strong ties to R.E.M. Songwriters Steve Wynn and Scott McCaughey, the unofficial fifth member of the Athens-based band, decided to move forward with the idea in 2007, at the R.E.M. pre-Hall of Fame induction party. Drummer Linda Pitmon and R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck (shown) joined the two in December, and the group crafted the 13-song album. Frank Franklin II/AP
