"Star Trek: The Next Generation" (1987-94): It took a few seasons to take off, but this series, set about 100 years after the original, raised the bar for what Trek could be. Patrick Stewart, Brent Spiner and Jonathan Frakes mixed gravitas and humor and the effects weren't bad for the time. Some call it the best Trek ever, though others found the series too ponderous.
