African-American portraits at Atlanta History Center

Philippe Levy-Stab's 2004 portrait of Wynton Marsalis puts the jazz trumpeter in the listening position, which is a switch. The world has long been attuned to listening intently to this son of New Orleans. A jazz traditionalist, Marsalis increasingly is playing on and composing classical works, such as the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra-commissioned "Blues Symphony."
