AJC Staff Photos of the Year, 2011-- Phil Skinner
ATLANTA-- Seaborn Johnson cuts civil rights icon Rev. Joseph Lowery's hair while Johnny Burden(in yellow) works on Shon Mawokomatanda at Burden's Barber Shop in Atlanta on Thursday, Oct. 6th. Lowery, who turned 90 on Oct. 6, is still active and addresses current controversies. The old civil rights leaders have mostly died or faded away, their memories marked by highway signs, monuments or grainy footage during Black History month. But not Lowery who was honored in 2011 by President Obama. Phil Skinner pskinner@ajc.com
